‘Print, Make, Wear: Creative Projects for Digital Textile’ published by Melanie Bowles, Senior Lecturer in Digital Textiles
Melanie Bowles is Senior Lecturer for digital print for the BA Textile Design course at Chelsea College of Arts. Her new book Print, Make, Wear: Creative Projects for Digital Textile has just come out (published by Laurence King 2015). In collaboration with the People’s Print, Melanie’s new book offers a step-by-step guide through DIY tutorials to make your own digital print designs. It includes examples of work by Chelsea’s TED research group, senior lecturer Kathryn Round’s work and Chelsea textile graduates. It makes the case for ‘democratic design’ approaches and includes a foreword by visiting lecturer and The People’s Print co-founder, Dr. Emma Neuberg.
We were delighted to be invited to the Burberry Prorsum A/W 2015 runway collection Perks Field, Kensington Palace Gardens on February 23rd. Ten students from BA and MA Textile Design were able to have a first-hand insight into the Autumn/Winter trends.
‘Patchwork, Pattern and Prints’, was a truly magical feast for the eyes for any textile student. Fabrics were richly embellished or printed, suede tassles swung in rhythm to Clare Maguire’s powerful rock voice, patchwork suede coats and high boots nodded to a sixties sentiment, and flowing floral print dresses gave the show a contemporary ‘Bohemian’ feel. This was ‘flower power’ for the 21st century – much to inspire emerging textile designers.
